Frequently Asked Questions

How much will it cost?

The pricing is still speculative, at an estimated $300-$350 excl. tax. This is using fairly conservative numbers and could be lowered with significant demand. Please fill in the IC form to help us get the most accurate estimate before it goes on sale.

What’s included in the kit?

The kit includes the following:

  • Top and bottom case (incl. the bottom plate)
  • Hot-swap PCB and daughterboard
  • Low-profile stabilizers
  • Plate foam
  • Light-blocking foams to prevent leakage around the LED’s
  • Screws
  • An extra set of silicone feet

With enough indicated interest, there will be a possibility of purchasing switches alongside your keyboard.

Will the keyboard come pre-assembled?

Yes, the keyboard will come pre-assembled. You’ll only have to pop-in your switches and keycaps.

What is the expected battery life?

The absolute minimum is 40 hours, with all LEDs on at maximum brightness. In reality, you should expect to get about 80-120 hours when using the LED display, and 3-6 months with the display off.

Will I be able to swap out different bottom plates?

Unfortunately, no. Due to the space constraints inside the keyboard, it’s not possible to add screws or magnets in this area and the plate has to be fixed to the bottom case permanently.

What are the supported mounting options?

There’s just one, the plate is integrated into the top case. It makes for a firm experience, but also helps the entire keyboard feel more solid. And with how thin it is, there’s no room for flex at all without interfering with the bottom case or worse, the battery.

What’s needed for the 2.4GHz dongle to happen?

The main hurdle is with the dongle device itself – to find a pre-certified one that is still compact, works well together with the keyboard, and can be easily updated with new firmware in the future.

Regardless of the above, firmware support for 2.4GHz will be provided from day one. For use with DYI dongle solutions like the Nordic nRF52840-Dongle or Xiao.

Is it open-source?

Yes. On the firmware side, it’s using ZMK which is already publicly available and continues to get more traction in the custom keyboard community.

The PCB source files will be published after the group-buy is finished.

Will there ever be other layout options?

Onigiri was created with the HHKB(-ish) layout in mind and there are currently no plans for alternatives.

If you like the design of it and wish it was available either as a traditional 60% or a different layout, please still consider filling in the first page of the IC form, and it will be considered in any future iterations.
